24th SPAR Budapest International Marathon

More than 3000 marathon runners stood at the start line of the 24th SPAR Budapest International Marathon last Sunday. Overall 13 300 participants ran in the different distances, including 500 marathon relay and ekiden runners.

The shorter distances were very popular amongst families and less experienced runners.

More than 2000 runners came from abroad, from 55 different countries. The majority of the runners came from France, Great Britain, Finland, Germany and Italy, but there were some participants from far away places like Columbia, Japan, Thailand, Argentina or South Africa.

The course of the race led through the most beautiful parts of the Hungarian capital, the runners had the chance to run across the Heroes' Square, through the very famous Andrássy Street, past the Buda Castle and the magnificent building of the Hungarian Parliament. While running, they could admire the breath-taking view of the city from the Chain Bridge.

Moses Chepkwony won the marathon in a tight race.

As the whole world will celebrate the 2500th anniversary of the legend of the marathon next year, Budapest Marathon Office will organise its 25th anniversary marathon.

Only a few more days to go until the start of the 24th SPAR Budapest International Marathon.

More than 10.000 runners will take part in the races of different distances and there will be more than 2700 individual marathon runners at the start line.

Where and how you can use the start number

50% discount from the entry ticket to the Mucsarnok (Budapest Art Gallery) between 4-11 October.

50% discount from the entry ticket to the Museum of Ethnography (Neprajzi Muzeum) for 1200 HUF for which you receive the following package: presentation of the exhibition "How we see the Finns" in English and Hungarian from 18 pm, Ethno Rom concert followed by a dance. It is an ideal programme for runners after the pasta party and you can still be in bed by 22 o'clock! Race Report - 24th Nike Budapest International Half Marathon

5300 finishers - 53 countries

The largest half marathon of Central Europe was organised for the 24th time in Budapest last Sunday. There were overall 8500 participants; 5300 individual runners, 400 relay teams and around 2400 children and family members took part in the Fun Run (3,5km).

This year 53 nations were represented in the race. There were more than 1500 runners from abroad, most of them came from the United Kingdom, the United States, Italy, France and Germany. However, there were participants also from far away places, such as Pakistan, Venezuela, Columbia, Japan or Singapore.

The course of the race led through the most beautiful parts of the Hungarian capital, the runners had the chance to run across the Heroes' Square, through the very famous Andrássy Street, past the Buda Castle and the magnificent building of the Hungarian Parliament. While running, they could admire the breath-taking view of the city from the Chain Bridge.

As the race is primarily for non-professional runners, professional athletes were not invited. The winner was a Hungarian resident Ethiopian runner, Erkolo Ashenafi, (1:07:24) The female winner was a Hungarian lady, Papp Krisztina. (1:15:27).

Budapest Marathon Organisation's next international event will be the 24th SPAR Budapest International Marathon on 4 October 2009. The number of expected participants is 15000.

The 25th Anniversary Nike Budapest International Half Marathon will be organised on 5 September 2010.

Get to know the fabulous Hortobágy National Park - while doing sports.

Have you ever seen the Hungarian Puszta running, walking or cycling? Have you ever been cheered by the Hungarian grey cattle, horse-herds or Mangalitsa pigs? If your answer is no, then it's time to try it. Take part in the 6. E.ON Délibáb Sport Day. Run a half-marathon in the heat of the Puszta, or choose one of the shorter distances (14 or 7 km). If you prefer walking, you can take part in the performance tour of 21 km or the walking trip of 7 km. For those who are keen on biking, we offer cycling tours (30km or 60km). All the courses lead through the wonderful Hungarian Puszta, which is part of the Unesco World Heritage.

Don't miss the opportunity to run, walk or cycle in Hortobágy.

Conquer the peak of Hungary - 12th Kékes Peak Run

On the13th of June you can undertake the task of running to our country's 1014 meter high peak, to Kékes. Conquer the mountain. Run up the hill and touch the red-white-green striped stone representing Hungary's highest point. You will have a unique experience. Come to Mátrafüred and take part in the Kékes Peak Run.

The distance of the race does not seem to be long for an experienced runner as it is 11,6 km - the race becomes serious due to the 671 meter level distance. The participants can only run in one direction: upwards.

If you wish to try this unusual run, start getting prepared now. Let us meet in Mátrafüred.

AIMS/ASICS WORLD ATHLETE OF THE YEAR AWARD

Constantina Dita Wins the AIMS/ASICS WORLD ATHLETE OF THE YEAR AWARD

The outstanding Romanian athlete Constantina Dita has been awarded the top honour in world road running, the AIMS/ASICS World Athlete of the Year Award, during a ceremony on Thursday 19th March 2009 at the Tokyo Marathon Expo, in Japan.

World President of AIMS Hiroaki Chosa presented the AIMS/ASICS Golden Shoe award, a world accolade from the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), prior to the Tokyo Marathon on Sunday 22nd March.

Constantina had an outstanding year in 2008, winning the gold medal for the marathon at the Beijing Olympics, and in the process becoming the oldest Olympic marathon champion ever at the age of 38 years and 7 months.

The AIMS/ASICS World Athlete of the Year Awards were founded in 1992 and are decided each year by way of nominations made by the member races of the world body The Association of International Marathons & Distance Races (AIMS). The membership totals some 260 races in over 85 countries covering every continent of the world.

Previous winners of the AIMS/ASICS World Athlete of the Year Award include Liz McColgan (Scotland), Uta Pippig (Germany), Tegla Loroupe (Kenya), Naoko Takahashi (Japan), Catherine Ndereba (Kenya) Paula Radcliffe (England), Mizuki Noguchi (Japan) and Lornah Kiplagat (Netherlands).

Hiroaki Chosa, World President of AIMS comments: "It is an honour to recognise today the considerable achievements of Constantina Dita. Constantina had an outstanding year last year and proved at the Olympics that she is an athlete of the highest calibre, therefore it is my pleasure to present her with this prestigious award on behalf of 260 members of AIMS from around the globe."

Constantina Dita comments: "It is a fantastic feeling to be honoured in this way, and to join a list of such esteemed winners is very special indeed. I would just like to say thank you to everyone involved. I am happy to be here for all of this week's events around the Tokyo Marathon, and I am looking forward to taking part in the 10K event."
